Kuninkaantammi wooden housing blocks

In this housing design project, the differences between timber-framed and concrete-framed residential buildings were compared during the design phase, construction phase, and during use. These buildings with different structural systems are located on adjacent, similar plots with identical zoning plans. The spatial programs and housing solutions were almost identical in both cases. The project was included in Helsinki's "Developing Apartment Building" program,

The research part of the project compared the time spent on design and construction, the carbon footprint of the buildings, changes in moisture levels within the structures after commissioning, and resident feedback. According to the results, the carbon emissions from building materials were 20% lower in the timber building compared to the concrete building. Design was faster for the concrete building, while construction was faster for the timber building.
